CMBC to Retire Historic Burton Union Sets

Monday 22 January 2024

The Carlsberg Marston Brewing Company (CMBC) in Burton-on-Trent has announced the retirement of its historic Burton Union sets used exclusively to ferment Marston's Pedigree. Two of the sets will be preserved at the Burton brewery to serve as a reminder of its brewing heritage, but will not be used to make beer. A Facebook group has formed to try and save the remaining four sets. CMBC said the decline in the UK cask market means the process using the sets was now unviable. The production of cask Pedigree will now be moved to stainless steel fermenters. CAMRA expressed disappointment at the loss of a unique and historic part of Britain's brewing heritage, but hoped the remaining Union sets could be made available to another brewery which might be interested in preserving this tradition.
